Full mouth reconstruction is usually possible.

What You Need to Know About Full Mouth Reconstruction

Full mouth reconstruction will vary by patient. Some people will need much more work than others. Here are some of the things that could be included in the process.

We will start by examining your teeth and your gums. We will look for signs of decay, and also see how healthy your gums are. In cases where your mouth has been damaged or injured, we will also need to take x-rays in order to get the full picture of your teeth and jawbone.

When checking your teeth, there are many different things that we will look at. We might decide to keep most of your teeth and fix them with dental crowns; for other people, it could be that we recommend tooth extraction for one or more teeth that would then be replaced. It could also be a combination of these things.

We will also want to check your jaw and your temporomandibular joints. We will check your bite, to see if the alignment is off. A bite issue can sometimes be corrected with a dental appliance, or we might suggest oral surgery.

If we plan to replace teeth using dental implants, we will also need to check to see how much bone you have in your jaw. If there is not enough bone, the implant will not take. Just because there is not enough bone does not mean that we will not be able to give you a dental implant. We will first need to replace the bone that is missing with a bone graft. After that has healed, we can proceed with the implant.

Surgery and Recovery Timeline

One thing that you will need to remember when it comes to a full mouth reconstruction is that it will take time. A process such as a bone graft can take weeks. If you need a full mouth reconstruction, expect it to take at least a year from start to finish. It could take even longer than that, especially if braces or a similar appliance is needed. Just remember that it will be worth it in the long run.

A full mouth reconstruction will take place in several stages because most of the time there is so much work to be done. Here at Turella Oral Surgery, we will be with you every step of the way. We want to make sure that you have a smile that you are proud of.
