Stephen J. Turella, DMD is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He prides himself on meticulous patient care, high standards for patient safety and service to his community.
He received an undergraduate BS in biology from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma. He then went on to attend the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine on an Army HPSP Scholarship.
After graduating with his DMD in 2002, Dr. Turella embarked on an 11 year Army Career. During that career he deployed with the 1st Brigade 25th infantry Division to Mosul Iraq for 9 months as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Upon returning from deployment, he started a 4 year Oral Surgery Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center. Before leaving the Army in 2013, Dr. Turella got the opportunity to serve as a staff surgeon then as assistant program director of the William Beaumont Army Medical Center's Oral Surgery Residency. He continues to further his training with regular continuing education courses, which includes serving as Director for a local Multi-disciplinary Dental Study Club.
Dr. Turella is thorough about his patient consultations and treatment plans. He regularly utilizes the latest dental technology including three-dimensional Cone Beam CT, intra-oral scanning and guided surgery for the most predictable treatment outcomes.
He also places a high emphasis on patient safety. Dr. Turella will, if he feels it is indicated, enlist the services of a board certified Anesthesiologist for lengthy reconstruction cases or for younger patients. He is also credentialed at Olympic Medical Center and does multiple cases there annually when treatment in a hospital setting is in the patient's best interest.

Since he came to the Peninsula, he has expanded access to care for the over 60% of our local youth (0-20) on Medicaid as the only local surgeon willing to accept their insurance. Since 2016 he has been providing local surgical services for these kids. Prior to that, these patients would have had to travel to Bremerton to receive these services. Dr. Turella understands for some of those kids, traveling that distance was an obstacle to care that they could not over-come.
He further serves our dental community by volunteering to provide care for low-income patients at the Olympic Peninsula Community Clinic (formerly VIMO) and by serving as the acting Olympic Peninsula Dental Society President.
In his free time Dr. Turella enjoys fishing, home improvement projects, Seattle sports and above all spending time with his family, which includes his daughters Libby and Clare, his wife Kirsti and his golden retriever, Ray.
